Making Money Blogging? Or Struggling Like Most?

It’s hard to be making money blogging when you suck at it. It’s not the dream that most blogger have when they start out… it’s just the reality.

Most bloggers dream of thousands of visitors to their blog and thousands of followers, many of whom will buy something so that you make money. You might be promoting affiliate offers or your own products or services, but most struggle to really make any money.

Since I have joined the Empower Network, I’m learning more and more why I have sucked at making money blogging. So, I thought I’d share some insights because you might suck at it too. When you know why something is not working, you can start taking steps to fix it.

Blogs that make money are really only focused on consistently (i.e., every day) doing one of two things. That’s right you can successfully make money from blogging by focusing nearly all of your blog energy on just TWO things.

The key is… and this is a BIGGY… that you need to do at least one of these things, and more appropriately both of them, EVERY day. That’s the real secret to success, and where most people fail miserably (yes, including yours truly).

The secret is not in endlessly searching for the next great lazy shortcut… Ooops, I mean marketing tip. The secret isn’t going to be in guru’s facebook secrets or twitter secrets or any other social media secrets course out there.

The secret is always in taking regular and consistent action. Get off your lazy butt and do something useful every day…. day after day after day… so that your blog and money making business is constantly improving.

Think about this for a second. How many mega successful businesses can you think of that are wasting time looking for shortcuts and quick fixes instead of constantly innovating and improving? Certainly not any that last.

That’s what you need to be committed to do with your blogging efforts. If you keep taking action every day your efforts will naturally improve. And, as your efforts improve, so will your business results.

I’m not saying that learning is not important, because it is. I’m a lifelong student and believe there is always room to improve the things I’m pursuing in my life.

But, you can’t spend all of your time trying to learn the game (or waste it looking for better shortcuts). You just gotta get in the game and trust that you’ll keep learning and improving as you go.

There is a famous axiom in business that many people say they believe in, but way too few practice… Be willing to fail your way to success.

So, here is your ‘To Do’ List. Decide to make a commitment and then take action on at least one of these every day…

1. Write and add an article to your blog.
2. Market and promote your blog post to get traffic and backlinks.

That’s all there is… Focus on these TWO things. Keep doing these two things day after day after day.

I know what you’re thinking…

‘Thanks for the way obvious advice dude! Doesn’t help much…’

I’m sure you think there is way more to actually making money blogging than this, but this really where bloggers fail time after time. You already know most of what you need to know to be a successful blogger; you just need to take more action consistently.

OK, let me see if I can add a little more meat to the bones of that advice. Here is a new modified ‘To Do’ List:

1. Add a unique, useful, keyword-rich article to your blog. Always keep in mind that what makes for good content is the stuff that people are interested in that is informative and entertaining.
2. Share your post, syndicate it through social networks, and get at least one link from an ‘on topic’ site, preferably with related keywords in the link.

OK, I can still hear you asking, ‘What about keyword research, site design, facebook integration, etc.?’

Of course those things are important, but so many bloggers waste so much time thinking about them that they lose sight of the TWO most important things…

Writing articles, marketing the post, writing articles, marketing the post.

There are some things that we’re doing a bit different that have attracted some criticism, and I wanted to answer them one by one:

Objection #1: If you’re paying out 100% of the revenue in commissions, how is your company making money?

Great question – what’s in it for Dave and I?  First of all – creating a front end loss and making money on the back end is a proven model from the largest social networks in the world – so even if we were going to do nothing else than profit on tools and resources on the back end, it’s already a proven, sustainable model.

The company will profit from three areas:

1. The exposure of the Empower Network will open up opportunity for Dave Sharpe, Myself, and core leaders to forge relationships with other large companies, allowing us to leverage our knowledge and create strategic business relationships that were never possible before – we also want to open up these opportunities to all of the leaders within our organization, giving you the chance to change your life and align yourself with some of the most influential minds in the world.
2. The way the passup compensation system works – although it is a VERY REAL possiblity that we will have people within the Empower Network that will out earn the entire company – it is inevitable that more than enough sales of our regular products will pass to the company to make it profitable enough to sustain the entire business model – and pay for technological expansion.  If you want a mathematical breakdown of this, I would be happy to do it.  In other words – the compensation plan is written to be equal to everyone, including ourselves, except where there is no one that is there to pass a sale up, it defaults to the company – again, that is the same way it works for every affiliate, but mathematically it is a sound financial model.
3. We’ll make a profit by marketing like everyone else.  Outside of the Empower Network, I own a couple of other large businesses, and the majority of traffic will be fed directly into the Empower Network, because it’s the most profitable thing that I have available for sale.
4. There will be opportunities to create tools, advertising campaigns, training seminars, and other low cost tools where we can create small profit margins – large enough to sustain and make the company thrive.

In other words – don’t worry about how we’re making money, we’re smart business people – our goal is to help YOU live a more empowered life, and expand your business faster, with more simplicity, and to give you the additional training you need.

Objection 2: Why are you having people get merchant accounts? Isn’t that risky?

Great question – the answer is actually the opposite.

The reality is – there is no way we could afford to pay 100% commissions if there wasn’t a model where people were paying each other directly.

For example – if I charge a customer – there is a minimal fee of about 2%, plus per transaction fees, plus customer service and maintenance fees.

If I only have 95% of the revenue – and I pay you 100%, there’s a net loss of 5%, which is not a sustainable business model.  That’s not even considering a check writing department, check writing fees, and other areas.  However, if you get a merchant account – you pay the 2% transaction fee (or whatever it is) and then keep the rest of the revenue.

Because your customer ‘bypassed’ the company in payment – we can effectively pay out 100% of the revenue, and you make money the same way Mike Dillard and Jonathan Budd do from their own product lines.

I also believe that because we’re asking people to be responsible merchants, and learn to run a real business, that it will dramatically increase our retention and decrease chargebacks.   We’re trying to teach people – as best as we can, to be ‘ethical’ business people and to learn to run a real company.

The other advantage to a merchant account, is that it allows affiliates to have funds deposited into their bank accounts directly, bypassing a wait time.

On a marketing level – this allows someone who is using the Empower Network as a ‘front end’ marketing funnel to ‘scale’ their marketing efforts out immediately, and re-invest profits back into advertising.

Because we are doing a 100% front end revenue share on ALL of our core products, the advertising is more cost effective to the affiliate and allows them to do things that traditional payment models cannot.

I believe that forging a long term merchant relationship will increase retention, increase commitment, and increase success, while reducing refund requests, chargebacks, and weeding out people who really shouldn’t be in business, anyways.

It is a SOUND model.

I have also noticed that people FEEL GOOD when they have a merchant account – it increases confidence in the validity of what they are doing – and the results of that are reflected in our growth.

Plus, we’re able to earn a small amount (very small) from merchant referrals – becoming a small, but important profit center to sustain our company growth.

If you’re an affiliate and you have a problem with that – keep in mind that your monthly overhead is about $125 per month at the highest leve, and ours, this month is over $40,000

Overall, openness, honesty, and integrity are at the forefront of our message, and we want to teach people not just how to think like a real business owner, but how to BE one, and then they can build whatever core Network Marketing business or service business they want on the back end of the funnel – because we give access to all of the member data for the people you personally refer.

Objection #3: What value is there aside from ‘getting money’?  Is this a Ponzi Scheme?

Lol.  I had to cover this one

Keep in mind, that the essential difference between a Ponzi scheme and Network Marketing is the actual value of the product offering.  The value of what we do essentially boils down into three categories:

1.  Business Simplicity. No setup, no technical overwhelm – get in, start blogging, get traffic, and that’s it.  Our system will do the rest, and we’ll help you to build whatever business you’re in faster.  Don’t worry about hosting, domain names, FTP access, or any of the other nonsense – just get in, and let us help you to market and sell through our proven, split tested pages and funnels that are setup, automatically.

Network marketing prospecting has become a hot topic online in recent years. With the explosive growth of the Internet, it just makes sense that the network marketing industry moves there for prospecting and business building purposes.

But, just jumping on the Internet isn’t going to make you a network marketing prospecting expert or a top MLM business builder. The vast majority of network marketers struggle with prospecting online because they consistently make the same killer marketing mistakes over and over again.

Here are five killer network marketing prospecting mistakes online that you need to avoid.

(1) Mistake number one is simply thinking that everyone is a prospect. This is a classic marketing blunder that network marketing prospectors just might be the biggest offenders of online.

When you believe everyone is a prospect for you MLM opportunity, then you end up chasing after and pestering bunches of people who never asked to hear about your opportunity. You waste a tremendous amount of effort chasing people who will never be good prospects to join your team.

You see this when someone is blasting out emails to all their friends and family inviting them to come take a look at their opportunity. And, with the growth of social networks online, you are likely to have been blasted with facebook and twitter updates with the same silly invitations.

It is the online version of making a list of everyone you know and then calling them to look at your business. What makes you think those people are good, high-targeted prospects for you network marketing opportunity?

The only people you should be prospecting to online are those that are already interested in network marketing.

(2) Mistake number two is leading with and promoting your primary business opportunity. This is a prospecting mistake that confuses virtually all network marketers.

You think because you joined a particular network marketing business opportunity, that it is the main thing you have to market and promote. But, it is not the place to start.

People are bombarded with online marketing messages, business opportunities, and money making opportunities. What is supposed to make your network marketing opportunity any better than the myriad of other choices out there?

Because most people who come into network marketing do not have any MLM or Internet experience, they are looking for a leader that can show them how to succeed in this industry. Focus on that and discussions regarding your particular opportunity will follow.

(3) Mistake number three is over promoting promises of huge financial and time freedom. Most network marketers are prospecting people for their network marketing opportunity using the premise of financial and time freedom.

Let’s set aside the fact that most network marketers have not achieved either of those goals as they are prospecting others for a moment. The fact of the matter is that it is simply the wrong focus. It is true that many people who join a particular network marketing opportunity would ultimately like to achieve financial and time freedom in their lives.

But, in terms of building a significant network marketing organization, it is not the best prospecting technique. The reason is that the gap from where they start to where that actual freedom is realized is too large. And, that leads to a large percentage of burnout in the industry.

(4) Mistake number four is marketing and promoting a company replicated web site. How can I put this gently? Company replicated web sites suck and they do not work!

When you try to send people directly to your MLM company replicated web site, you are going to turn off more people than will ever become interested.

Company replicated sites are typically blatant promotional sites that are committing each of the first three killer network marketing prospecting mistakes. They do not provide a good way for you to create a connection with your prospects, begin building a relationship of trust, and establish yourself as a leader in network marketing worth following.

You want to have a presence online, but if a company replicated web site is your primary presence then prepare to struggle.

(5) Mistake number five is having either a poorly thought out or no follow-up plan. It is unlikely that your prospects will rush to join your business after your first online contact with them.

Marketing wisdom shows that a large percentage of decisions are made after six to seven successful positive contacts. Too many network marketers simply become pest if they actually do any follow up. Vemma Business Opportunity -- Company Overview:

Vemma was founded by BK Boreyko and his family. Their mission is to make a positive difference through people helping people.

New Vision, Vemma’s parent company, has achieved over $1 billion in total retail sales within the health and wellness industry.

In other words, the company leadership has been around and has a proven track record. BK Boreyko has proven that he knows how to market and grow a company. That’s important element to consider when evaluating the Vemma business opportunity. 

Vemma stands for vitamins, essential minerals, mangosteen, and aloe. It has been clinically studied as a liquid blend of 12 essential antioxidant vitamins and 65 plant-sourced trace ionic minerals, but has not yet been formally approved by the Food and Drug Administration, Boreyko says, “It is one of the most powerful liquid antioxidants on the planet, is one of the best delivery systems for nutrients, and it tastes great.”

Vemma Business Opportunity -- Products

Vemma’s flagship product is a liquid supplement drink simply called Vemma. It comes in a few different packaging formats including 32 oz bottles or their 2 oz fridge pack bottles. One thing I can tell you is the products are not cheap. Expect to pay at least $60 a month for Vemma products.

Over the years, Vemma has diversified their product line to ensure the company is not reliant on a single product. They’ve done so by introducing complimentary or extended versions of their Vemma product including:

• Verve, a healthy energy drink,
• Next, specifically blended for children under 12 years old, and
• Thirst, their healthy hydration solution.

This is also a positive as it shows that the company is conscious of continual product development.

Vemma Business Opportunity -- Compensation Plan

Vemma uses a binary compensation plan, which is common in the MLM industry. That means that you build two legs in your organization, a left leg and a right leg. You have to place at least one representative in each leg to be eligible for compensation. The company pays out on a weekly basis based on revenue cycles produced in your downline legs.

Can you make any real money with Vemma? Absolutely, but it is going to take some significant work on your part.

Vemma pays you primarily based on the volume of product sales. That’s a good thing, because that is what legitimate MLM businesses need to do to avoid being pegged as a pyramid scheme.

But, does all of that make the Vemma business opportunity a good choice or a bad one?

But, the products are not cheap and many of those family members will stop ordering after a month or two. Are you looking for Scentsy Reviews? Maybe you’re evaluating the Scentsy business opportunity or searching for information to help you become a successful Scentsy consultant.

Well, you’ve found a Scentsy review from a third party network marketing coach who has not joined the Scentsy business opportunity. So let’s talk about the Scentsy opportunity.

Founded in 2004, Scentsy began marketing and distributing their wickless scented candle bars through their independent home party distributors. Their innovative product line has been created and offered as a safe alternative to burning candles.

Scentsy has certainly been a hot topic in MLM appearing in the top 100 direct selling companies in the world according to Direct Selling News (DSN). As the official publication of the Direct Selling Association, DSN is widely considered on of the most comprehensive reports in the industry.

A 2009 sales figure of $178.4 million places this fragrance company at a solid 64th place among the top 100 direct selling companies. Company President and co-owner, Heidi Thompson says, “This ranking validates the tremendous growth Scentsy has experienced, but our success is merely a result of passionate customers and party consultants…” The 35,000 independent consultants are spread throughout North America, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

So in other words, Scentsy is a very solid company with a well-proven track record.

But, that’s not all you need to look at in your Scentsy reviews.

There’s more to look at when evaluating the opportunity and whether or not you should get involved. You want to be sure you consider the product viability, the company compensation plan, and what it will take to build a Scentsy business.

As was previously mentioned, Scentsy began by marketing their wickless scented candle bars. Since that time, the company has continued to expand the product line and offer innovative new products that are well received by consumers. This niche is well defined and has huge market potential as it is primarily marketed to women. The safer alternative to an open flame makes it very attractive.

The company’s track record in sales growth has proven the viability of their product line and fit as a viable nework marketing opportunity.

Scentsy does offer a multi-level compensation plan for this business opportunity, with the income coming from two primary sources. The first source of income is from commissions off of retail sales. Once certain rank levels are achieved, consultants may earn royalties off of those customers who in turn decide to retail the products themselves.

The following compensation plan details are offered from Scentsy’s own materials for your review:

Earnings

• You earn 20% commission until your first $1,000 in personal retail sales, and 25% on your personal retail
  sales after your first $1000.
• You can earn 2-9% personal sales royalty, based on the wholesale value of your qualified personal sales. The
  % earned is determined by your “paid as” rank in the Compensation Plan.
• You can earn 2-9% team sales royalty, once you become qualified, based on the wholesale value of your
  team’s sales. This % is calculated on any Consultant in your personal team who is at a LOWER rank than you
  in the Compensation Plan. The % earned is determined by your “paid as” rank in the Compensation Plan.
• You can earn .25%-3% as a Director on your Director teams down through three (3) generations. The %
  earned is calculated on your Director’s GWV. The % earned is determined by your “paid as” rank in the
  Compensation Plan.

In addition, Scentsy offers various incentive and rewards programs to consultants on a monthly and annual basis. One thing I noted in particular in my review of the Scentsy compensation plan is how you can lose part of your compensation any time one of your consultants advances to a rank higher than you have achieved. When this happens, the qualifying royalties will be rolled up to the next highest consultant above you. That could be a significan loss of royalties when someone that you brought into the organization advance faster than you do. Just something to pay attention to in your Scentsy reviews.

All in all, given that track record of the company and based on my review, Scentsy is absolutely a legitimate business opportunity with tremendous potential.

However, having a great opportunity doesn’t mean that Scentsy independent consultants are automatically going to succeed. The biggest challenge that any home-based business owner has is how well they will market their business and product offerings.

To be successful in network marketing, you must continuously develop marketing and leadership skills. The fact of the matter is that even the best company with the best product offerings will struggle without effective marketing.

As a Scentsy independent consultant, you’ll be expected to market the products and the opportunity. If you get involved, make sure you learn how to effectively market your business in a way that is attractive, fits you, and will work consistently and over time for you.

Learn how to position yourself as a leader in the network marketing industry as well as within Scentsy. When your prospects are doing their own Scentsy reviews, this is what wil ultimately attract the best independent consultants to your team.

Honestly, if you master leadership and marketing skills so that you attract people into your business, then it won’t matter if you join Scentsy or not. You will be positioned to succeed in the network marketing industry no matter what opportunity you join.
